Our Story
The name Alaka’i was born inside the world of summer camps, when counselors had the urge to express their emotions in a way transmittable to campers. It was through a chant called haka that those emotions were channeled to feel the excitement that camp represents. Alaka’i is one of the words in such chants, which means the value of leadership in hawaiian.
We discovered that Alaka’i represented more than its actual meaning. Alaka’i is not only a word, it is a way of life which guides others through respect and trust. We believe in the growth of kids and adults by experiential learning. Which we consider to be the most effective way of learning. Experiential Learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as “learning through reflection of doing”
We have been in the summer camp world for several years, therefore we know the importance of children experiencing it and how it can have a positive impact in their growth, so we decided to build a path named Alaka’i.
Our main purpose is for kids to have fun. Nonetheless we consider their growth very important. We will lead and foster the ability to experience a fun driven life away from technology and closer to nature.
We know that certain interactions and know-hows have been lost for different reasons, in which technology plays a very important role. Kids and adults are so connected through technology that they disconnect from the world around them. Alaka’i is a place that we have created to be the most compelling and memorable summer camp where kids can experience the freedom and independence of what truly means to be a kid.
